陰&陽, a Couple of Chinese Characters, are derived from the two sides of a hill(阜-,i.e. 阝). So it is the definition.that the outer side is called Yang while the inner side is called Tin. That is, anything outer moving inwards is called YangQi, as anything inner going outwards called YinQi. Considering the unbalance between Yin & Yang, four kinds of state may occur: YinQi going outwards too more, YangQi coming inwards too more; YinQi too less, or YangQi too less. Each one of them is an abnormal state, while the normal state, the balance status between Yin & Yang, is the unique. The five states, one normal and four abnormal states, are called Five States(五行) in Chinese, so-called Wuxing(五行).So is Zangxiang, a concept in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) based on the Five States(五行).That is why we can always find an abnormal apearance in pulse shape on a patient wrist with TCM theory (pulse shapes system modeled on four seasons' pulse shape), while there is always one normal pulse shape(Wei-pulse shape) with a normal person. Pulse shape theory related with Zangxiang is a very important principle for diagonosis in TCM.
