In this paper, ancient description and modern advances in Traditional Chinese Medical studies on chronic bronchitis are reviewed. The main pathologenic mechanisms for chronic bronchitis are hypofunction of the lung and spleen and insufficiency of the kidney-yang. The principle for treatment of the disease is to invigorate the lung, the spleen, and the kidneys, and to resolve phlegm and relieve cough. Clinical and experimental studies of CPCFPC on treatment of chronic bronchitis due to hypofunction of the lung and insufficiency of the kidney-yang were conducted, and its features of composition and mechanisms of function were discussed. The results showed that: 1.CPCFPC had better effects than Jin Shui Bao capsule did in invigorating the lung, the spleen, and the kidneys, and in deminishing the signs of patients with chronic bronchitis.2.Clinically, CPCFPC had significant effects of improving the X-ray features of the chest, reducing the increased body temperature and leukocytes number, promoting the function of the lung, and turning the sputum culture from positive to nagative.3.CPCFPC showed no toxic and side effects, indicating that it is a safe and reliable Chinese Medicinal Drug, which treats both the symptoms and causes of the throric bronchitis simultaneously.4.Experimentally, ethanol extract from pupa cordyceps fungus powder showed significant central inhibiting effects, but there was no influence on blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration in dogs; it also showed effects of removing phlegm, relieving cough and asthma, and spasmolysis. All these results indicate that pupa cordyceps fungus powder and natural cordyceps powder have similar effects.lt is valuable todevelop the pupa cordyceps fungus power as a new medicine to treat some respiratory diseases.
