Objectives:(1) To translate and edit the "Constitution in Chinese Medicine Questionnaire" into Korean, so it can be used on Korean people; (2) to evaluate the quality of the Korean version of "Constitution in Chinese Medicine Questionnaire"; (4) to survey the Chinese Medicine body constitution of Korean sample, in order to understand the distribution and influential factors and their health issues; (5) to compare the difference between the survey results of Korean and general Chinese population, in order to understand the impacts from ethnics, geographic locations, life and diet routines on Chinese Medicine body constitution. Methods:This study is based on and supported by The national key basic research and development plan (973 Project) "The Study of Chinese Medical Original Thinking and Health Identification Methods System" Project (2011-2015, subject number:2011CB505400). Research methods:(1) Translate "Constitution in Chinese Medicine Questioiinaire" into Korean using the standardized procedures of "Cross-Cultural Foreign Language Scale". The translated "Constitution in Chinese Medicine Questionnaire" was used on 60 Korean as preliminary survey sample between August 2013 and May 2014. (2) From May to November 2014, a cross-sectional study was conducted on 300 Korean who are aged from 18 to 60 in shopping mall, community, and schools in the PRC. The surveys were done in person using the Korean version to verify the quality of the translation. The translation was further refined based on the preliminary survey result. SPSS 20.0 software was employed for statistical analysis. The distribution of constitutional type and other personal information were described with constitution ratio, the reliability and validity of the scale were evaluated by Cronbach’s factor analysis and factor analysis method. The potential impact factors of constitution type were investigated through logistic regression analysis. (4) Compare the result of previous study of general Chinese population to the result of studies conducted on Korean and analyzes the difference.Results:(1) Out of the 60 preliminary respondents,95% expressed that they understand fully of the Korean questionnaire. Based on the preliminary survey,52 out of the 60 translated questions in the questionnaire were confirmed while the other 8 questions were further revised, amended and reverse translated. We, therefore, have the initial formation of the preliminary compiling of Korean version of "Constitution in Chinese Medicine Questionnaire". The acceptance rate and the completion rate of the Korean version of "Constitution in Chinese Medicine Questionnaire" is 100%, and 100% consider it be ture of their daily life habbits, cultures and customs. (2)The reliability and validity of the Korean version Contitution in Chinese Medicine Questionnaire were assessed based on the cross-sectional study of 300 participantsis. The Spearman correlation coefficient of the 9 sub-scale (Balanced Constitution, Qi-deficient Constitution, Yang-deficient Constitution, Yin-deficient Constitution, Phlegm-dampness Constitution, Damp-he at Constitution, Stagnant Blood Constitution, Stagnant Qi Constitution, Inherited Special Constitution) is 0.75-0.89; total scale split-half reliability of 0.887; internal reliability is consistent, the overall Cronbach’s a coefficient is 0,943 while each sub-scale’s Cronbach’s a coefficient is between 0.81-0.45 which shows a good internal consistency. Bartlett test ofsphericity statistics X= 8132.587, P<0.001, therefore suitable for factor analysis. KMO= 0.891, extract 16 common factors, the overall contribution rate is 65.54%, indicating an excellent effectiveness and validity of the questionnaire. (3) Among the Korean respondents, body constitution varies by different gender, age, marital status, occupation, and education level. The ratio of the difference was significant (P<0.001). The statistical analysis of the distribution of the body constitution shows the correlation between each factor is different. (4) There is more balanced constitution founded among the Korean than in the general Chinese population. There is also more Yang-deficient Constitution among the Korean respondents than in the general Chinese population, while there are less Qi-deficient Constitutions founded among them.Conclusions:(1) The translation of "Constitution in Chinese Medicine Questionnaire" would require the participation of professionals with different culture background as it would need to be customized for different ethnic groups. This research translated the "Constitution in Chinese Medicine Questionnaire" into Korean which provided a tool to conduct large scale research among Caucasians. (2) The split-half reliability rate and internal consistency reliability of the Korean version of the "Constitution in Chinese Medicine Questionnaire" are all excellent. Content validity and structure correlation are all good. (3) There are different demographic features of the Korean respondents. Overall, the top two unbalanced constitutions are Yang-deficient Constitution and Inherited Special Constitution. There is also more Yang-deficient Constitution among the Korean respondents than in the general Chinese population, while there are less Qi-deficient Constitutions founded among them.
