Evergreen broad-leaved forest is a kind of evergreen forest developing under subtropical humid climatic conditions. With in the extent of subtropical world, because of control by the subtropical high pressure, the deserts and Ocean area has the majority of the subtropical world . In China's subtropics, because of effects of relative sea-land position, general atmospheric circulation and existence of Qin-Tibet plateau, monsoon subtropics occupy so great a proportion that there is an extensive area with a warm subtropical climate and subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest is widely distributed in the area, roughly from 22?to 34?north latitude, with an area of over 2.5 million square kilometers. With the global distribution of evergreen broad-leaved forest, the largest and most typical one is in China. It contains very abundant species in which many species are endemic to China's subtropics. Therefore evergreen broad-leaved forest in China's subtropics plays a very important role in the global biological diversity and natural environment conservation. However, human-induced disturbances in the last several decades have destroyed most of the valuable vegetation. As a result, diversity loss and environmental degradation have been a serious problem. It is necessary to restore and rehabilitate the evergreen broad-leaved forest .Zhejiang Province is located in China's subtropics, the primary vegetation of which is subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest. However, human-induced disturbances in the last several decades have destroyed most of the vegetation of this rare type on the earth. So far the evergreen broad-leaved forest accounts for a small percentage of the forest area in Zhejiang The ecological function of EBLF is very weak. Therefore, it is necessary to study its floristic characteristics, community physiognomy and structure, diversity and stability, successional rules and features of natural recovery process, and discuss the measures for its restoration and rehabilitation. All of these are of significance in both theory and practice. This project, based on field investigations and experiments, is mainly targeted at studies on present status and historical change process, floristic features, and community physiognomy and structure, species composition and diversity characteristic, natural restoration-cum-successional rules of evergreen broad-leaved forest in Zhejiang with modern ecological methods. The results were as follows:(1) Dominant families of the flora composition in the evergreen broad-leaved forest of Zhejiang were Fagaceace, Lauraceace and Hamaelidaceace. Their importance value index (IVI) were 49.6 %, 6.8 % and 5.4 %, respectively. In terms of types of geographical distribution, the Pan-tropic type topped the families, followed by cosmopolitan and North-temperate types. Dominant genera of the flora composition in Zhejiang EBLF were Cyclobalanopsis, Castanopsis, Schima, Lithocarpus and Machilus. Their IVI were 23.8 %, 16.8%,21.6%,6.0% and 3.5%, respectively. As for geographical distribution types of genera, the type of the Tropic Asia topped the genera, followed by East Asia & North America disjointed, North Temperate and Pan tropic. Their IVI were 38.7 % ,34.3 % ,11.3 % and 8.1%, respectively. Dominant species in Zhejiang EBLF were Schima superba, Lithocarpus glabra, Castanopsis Carlesii, Castomopsis fargesii and Machilus thunbergii. As for geographical distribution types of tree species, the elements endemic to subtropical China occupied a high percentage of tree species, followed China-Japanese elements and China-Japanese-Indo-China peninsula elements. Their IVI were 67.9%,21.6%, and 60%, respectively. It can be seen from the above that EBLF in Zhejiang has typical characteristics endemic to China's subtropics.(2) Physiognomy is one of obvious features of a community, and mainly reflects life form and leaf features of the community. Through analyzing the life-form spectrum and leaf-class spectrum, it can be seen that phanelophytes were absolutely dominant in the lif...
