Cotton bollworm (CBW) is more serious pest in cotton belt of Xinjiang, China. In order to guarantee the biggest commercial cotton belt sustaining and healthy, Information project of pest monitoring and prediction is carried out in this commercial cotton base. In this research, we are focussing on automatical data acquisition, data delivery, design and construction of database, data processing and data display and forecast based on GIS. Key technologies and difficulty are explored, which is built the manipulable technologies and management platform for regional monitoring and prediction of cotton bollworm.1. Automatic monitoring for population dynamic of CBWThe automatic monitoring instruments, which are firstly applying for detecting the population size of CBW in China, take a case for other pest monitoring. One-year research showed that the instrument is effective and efficient for monitoring CBW, and it could improve the precision and reliability.2. Automatic monitoring for Microenvironment factors.In 2001,13 automatic instrument is installed in Shihezi, Xinjiang. Good monitoring results have been gained via sensors. Under enough fund support, main and accessory stations willl be built. Accessory stations will collect the microenvironment factors which are correlative with pest outbreak and epidemic.3. Design and construction of regional integrated database system for CBWAccording to the national industry forecasting criterion of Helicoverpa armigera Htlbner , and characteristics of agricultural environment, the database of cotton bollworm(CBW) is developed based on Microsoft SQL server. Which contain fourteen sheets for CBW biological data and environment index . Five kinds of input-data ways are put forward based on database framework, a) based on Microsoft SQL server b) based on heterogeneous database and processed for batch data(Excel, Foxpro, Access) c) based on Microsoft Web d) based on CBWMIS (PC vision, CBW management information system)which is developed by our group e)input data of farm environment index and CBW dynamic which are collected through GPRS(General Packet Radio Service) or telephone modem in automatic mode. Owing to the expensive cost of Internet communications, the system of CBWMIS is considered for inputting data and transmitting information. During forecasting system is used, it is necessary for old and new system to operate several years at the same time, and to modify new system and establish the relationship between the two systems. Additionally, those can provide key parameters for new system and guarantee the old system to displace with new system safely and successfully.4. Long-distance data transmissionCombined with the characteristics of mobile network such as high covering rate, and simpleness of sending short message, GSM (global systems for mobile communication) is prevalent. With the support of hardware and software, the data investigated artificially from the field are sent to the GSM modem (or GPRS modem) of the teledata server by normal format of short message. The software system of server can deal with the short message, and store the information of CBW to the corresponding database.This mode is mainly used to collect artificially field data, because the number of these data is small and they must be transmitted and delt with in time. The information collected automatically by these special devices such as single chip and so on, can be saved to the storage of machine by the mean of document. The database can be accessed by the wireless GPRS modem.5. Regional forecasting on cotton bollwormBased on the weather data of geographical points and the phenological data of CBW, the single sine model that forecast the occurrence date of cotton bollworm is developed. By using year's data of Shihezi area, parameter of CBW emergence of overwintering generation, first generation and second generation in the Xinjiang region is built under the different low temperature.
