With the rapid development of economy, heavy load traffic has become key controlling factor for asphalt pavement constructional design and material design. In this connection, the damages of pavement are serious and have complex reasons. When pavement premature failure (rutting, water damage) occurs with very high frequency in nationwide freeways which under different environment condition, traffic load, construction level and raw material, we have good reason to believe with very great probability that the existing asphalt mixture design method is not able to meet the requirement of heavy load traffic. old-time engineering experience is difficult to guided new engineering construction and solve new technological problem.In order to solve the pavement premature damage phenomena, existing asphalt mixture design method's defect of compacting style and design standards are analyzed; Gyratory testing machine (GTM) which is in possession of gyratory compacting style and mechanical parameter design standards is applied; New base machine angle which based on asphalt mixture's preferable durability and optimal comprehensive road performance is recommended. Through analyzing large numbers of experimental data and studying on granular material strength theory, new criteria and new GTM design method is put forward. Using asphalt as medium, the new test method -asphalt immersing test method which can accurately measure mixture's theoretical maximum density and aggregate's effective density is exploited. Volume parameter and road performance of asphalt mixtures which designed respectively by GTM method and Marshall Method are contrasted. Introducing rutting resistance and water damage resistance as control target and GTM as test machine, continuous dense graded asphalt mixtures optimization grading range of AC-25, AC-20, AC-16 and AC-13 are put forward. Based on all of research findings, new computing and design method which can work out excellent rutting resistance and water damage resistance mixture is brought forward.
