In order to adapt current needs of the rapid growth of traffic industry and economic development, the study of improving the performance of the ordinary paving asphalt attracts researcher's attention. Modified asphalt production and investigation have become one of the most animate problems in the research field of the new road-building material.By adding small quantities of modifier into base asphalt, the asphalt is improved evidently in temperature sensitivity, stability, durability, adhesiveness and anti-aging property. Polymer modifiers are mainly applied and studied among various modifiers. The polymer SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer) has eminent properties such as good tensile property, low temperature resistance, dissolubility and unique anti-sliding property. SBS is widely used to the modification of asphalt in many polymer modifiers. However, it is difficult to form a stable system when mixing SBS and base asphalt together, and they are easy to isolate during hot storage. The reason of isolation is that SBS and the asphalt have obvious differences in composition and structure. It is important to study the mechanism of the SBS modification and the compatibility of the SBS and the asphalt. In this study, the asphalt produced by Liaohe Oil Field is used as the base asphalt and the star SBS made by Yueyang Petrochemical Company is used as the modifiers in our experiments. The performance and the modification mechanism of the modified asphalt have been studied. The results show that SBS modified asphalt exhibit better high and low temperature property. There are physical blend between SBS and base asphalt. Simultaneously, dispersion of the modifiers in asphalts changes from discrete phase to continuous phase with the increasing amount of the modifiers.Inorganic material as stabilizer is added into the SBS modified asphalt to improve the storage stability of the SBS modified asphalt and to solve the isolating phenomenon between SBS and asphalt. Zinc oxide is selected as stabilizer by screening the effect of various...
