In the developing stage of knowledge intensive industry, a new engineering discipline—Intelligence Engineering (IE) is put forward to suit the demands for decision-making automation and large scale knowledge integration in industry. It can use computer systems to build and solve multiple knowledge models of complicated problems. Packing problems are categorized as discrete combinatorial optimization problems with NP-Complete computational complexities. It is rather difficult to precisely and completely express packing problems using any single knowledge model such as mathematical model or symbolic models. In designing clocks and watches, traditional CAD technologies and expert systems are needed to solve numerical and geometrical models and symbol models respectively. Besides, packing theories are needed to guide solving the optimization model while designing the overall layouts of the movements. Therefore, only by using the IE technologies can we integrate the complicated multiple knowledge models. Based on the IE, this dissertation develops an integrated intelligent designing system (II system) with a parallel and hierarchical structure. This system has been successfully used in clocks and watches design. Centering on the II system, the whole paper discusses various theories and advanced designing technologies used in the system. It can be outlined as follows:An analysis of the relationships and differences among Artificial Intelligence, CAD, intelligent CAD, intelligent design, and Intelligence Engineering has been carried out , and it is pointed out that IE has great significance in guiding practical engineering activities. Through a survey on researches of clocks and watches design and packing problems both inland and abroad, and aiming at clocks and watches design tasks, the II system with a parallel and hierarchical structure is proposed. The construction and contents of sub-models in intelligent clocks and watches design system are introduced. The architecture and working principle of the meta-system, which is the integrator and manager of the entire system, are emphatically discussed. The new designing system architecture proposed by this dissertation can guide the solving of complicated designing problems which deal with much domain knowledge.Based on the nature of designing movements of clocks and watches, this paper uses expert systems to make initial design of the overall packing, and then adopts genetic algorithm and simulated annealing algorithm to optimize the design. Expert systems are built by using GDEST, that is a general designing expert system tool developed by the author. After briefly introducing the development of expert systems, this paper explains the principles and using guide of GDEST in detail.Through the analysis of current research status of heuristic methods in various areas, it is pointed out that research activities should strengthen their cooperation with different heuristic methods that have special effects on practical complicated problems. The optimization of gear parameters in designing movements of clocks and watches is a combinatorial optimization problem. It is difficult to solve the problem...
