Mass customization (MC) is a successful method for some enterprises to win the market competition and has become a popular manufacturing mode for the modern enterprise. Configuration design is a key technology to realize the product customization in MC. Currently, there are some new requirements for the configuration system, such as, integrating the customer's requirement, advancing the configuration efficiency, extending the adaptive range of customized product and so on. To realize these requirements, this paper aims to the main processes and the key technologies of configuration design and mainly studies the acquirement and transformation of customers' requirements, configuration modeling, configuration reasoning and configuration evaluation etc.In the process of customer's requirements decomposition, the concept of requirement unit and granularity of requirement unit is introduced. A new decomposing method is put forward, in which four principles should be followed. The four principles include semantic segmentation, semantic transformation, human-machine-environment supplement or subdivision, and combination of the similar requirement units. This method can decompose the customer's fuzzy and abstract requirements to specific and concrete requirement units. Based on the requirement decompsition, the model of requirement unit analysis tree is established by controlling the granularity of requirement unit. The representation of first order predicate logic is adopted to describe the requirement unit in formalization. The adaptability of QFD (Quality Function Development) for configuration design is analyzed and IHOQ (Improved House of Quality) is brought forward, with which customer's requirements could be transferred into the useful information in configuration design so as to guide the configuration process. Then, the method system of IHOQ, which integrates the method of requirement decomposition and IHOQ tool comes into being. By this method system, the customer's requirements could be transformed into the design information effectively and rapidly.On the basis of analyzing the difference between the product family model and the configuration model, the characteristics of configuration model are discussed. From the viewpoint of expression and constitution of the configuration model, the idea of class and feature is introduced. The constituent elements to realize the different functions in the model are taken as the class and the different structures to realize a function are taken as the sub-class. Then, element classes are encapsulated, the relations between them are built and the configuration model based on class and feature is established. The 00 (Object Oriented) characteristics of the configuration model are analyzed and the advantages of this configuration modeling are discussed.By analyzing the characteristic and function of constraint in configuration reasoning, constraints are divided into different grades, and GCSP (Grade Constraint Satisfaction Problem) of configuration design is put forward and its mathematical expression is presented. The constraint is classified into two types, namely, modeling constraint and technical demandconstraint, and the mapping rule of technical demand constraint is presented. According to above-mentioned two kinds of constraints, the constraint's level is determined. By endowing the vertex and arc of direction graph with new meanings, GCSP network is established. The combination of the consistency method and the spread technology based on the map are used to solve the constraints. In the solving process, the contradictions between constraints could be eliminated by reducing the constraint's level and modifying the value of active varible.According to the characteristics of production and the transformation results of IHOQ and from the viewpoint of economy, technology and sociality, the evaluation index system of. a money-binding machine and the mathematical model of fuzzy synthesis evaluation on its configuration scheme are established.Based on the above studies, the configuration system prototype of the money-binding machine is developed and its running results prove the feasibility of the proposed methods in this paper.
