Sine the new nation standard—《The unified standard of the reliability design on building structure 》(GB50068—2001)has been announced, the reliability designing theory has been ripening. It has been found that the same procedure may not be easy to be adopted in foundation reliability designing. As a result, more attentions should be paid on studying and applying the random field of soil parameter. This paper studied the characteristic of random field of soil parameter according to the technique of the geographic information system (GIS). The follows aspects are concerned in the paper:1.This paper expatiates the basic concept of assortment and digital feature of the random fields in geotechnical engineering; exams if the soil parameters are able to be treated as the homogeneous stationary random field on the basis of calculating its digital feature and tests whether this random fie1ds is a stationary process and ergodic.2.the concept and logic of the database was designed by analyzing the object and mission of the GIS, the user's demand and the source of data. The professional module is established by the function of dimensional analysis and assistant decision--making of GIS, so that the useful geologica1 information is managed, soil parameters of the unbuilt areas are predicted using these geological informations.3.Taken the Reconnaissance-GIS of Baoding as an example, the development the combination of the random field theory and the GIS is realized.4.Appling correlation function theory and variable function theory acquires to prove the relation of the two theories closely related. The paper successfully completed the verification.5.The value of correlation distance is acquired by using the correlation function method and variable function method based on the random fields theory of soil parameter in actual engineering. 6.The prediction of the soi1 parameters is analyzed in-depth on the basis of studying the correlation distance.
