Optimization of in-core fuel management, which is important to the economy of the nuclear power plant, is an international cutting-edge topic and has some results achieved for PWRs. The developing progress of fast reactor is relatively slowly compared to PWRs in recent years. There is no systematic study about in-core fuel management for fast reactor in or out of China. Along with the proposal of Generation IV advanced nuclear system concepts and the development of fast reactor technology in China, the issue of fast reactor in-core fuel management optimization is proposed.In this paper, CEFR (China Experimental Fast Reactor) and CDFR (China Demonstration Fast Reactor) are chosen to be studied. Character Statistic Algorithm and three-dimensional nodal method code for fast reactor (HND code) are selected to do the research and development of fast reactor in-core fuel management.The application of CSA in fast reactor in-core fuel management is carried out in this paper with the new Character Parameter defined according to the features of fast reactor. The results show that CSA can be successfully applied in the optimization of fast reactor in-core fuel management. HND code is further developed because of the inconvenient updated cross sections and lack of burn up calculation capability. The improved HND code is precise enough for fast reactor core design and fuel management.Perturbation theory is combined with CSA method in this paper for the optimization work because of its convenience in small perturbation reactivity calculation. The results show that the combination of perturbation and CSA method can get good optimization efficiency with no loss of global properties.The optimization works of CEFR in this paper show that the existing Loading Pattern is an optimum one that can meet the safety limits, and further an optimized LP for CEFR equilibrium cycle is proposed. The optimization studies of CDFR provide the basis for the LP design of CDFR which is under design now.
