The engineering radial tire has the merit of ride-ability, energy conservation, durability, security and comfort at the high speed. The manufacture technology of radial tire, however, is complex and fiddly. The typical defects caused by the faulty industrial installation and manufacturing technique, such as bended cord, crossed cord, wide spacing cord, impurity and belt defects will have a direct or indirect influence on the quality tire and shorten the useful time of it. Since the quality of the tire is directly linked to the security of driver and vehicle, the production detection of the tires is placed great emphasis by every country to find the problems, adjust the techniques and improve the quality of the production.The history, characters, inner defects and inspection method of engineering radial tire are introduced in this paper. The imaging characters of tire X-ray inspection are lucubrated. An image segmentation method is given based on analysis of tire X-ray image histogram distribution. According to the shape, scale, detail and arrangement direction of cord, the defects recognition methods are proposed. The engineering radial tire defects diction system, which can complete the X-ray image acquisition and defects recognition, is designed.The major innovations achieved in the dissertation are as follows:(1)The characters of the tire X-ray inspection system are analyzed quantitatively. The imaging rules of the tire X-ray inspection system are summarized. The non-definition and resolution of the system are analyzed. The X-ray distribution formulas are deduced based on the analysis of the special tire X-ray imaging set-up.(2)The image segmentation method based on grey correction is proposed to eliminate the redundant background of the X-ray image of the tire. Firstly, the smoothing filter is introduced to eliminate the belt and noise of tire X-ray image. The second step is to correct the gray of pixels according to the proportion relationship between the mean of whole image and mean of each pixel's neighborhood. Finally, the binarization is performed to complete image segmentation.(3)The characters of cord and impurity defects in engineering radial tire is analyzed and summarized. The normal defects are classified into shape, scale, detail and arrangement direction, while bended cord can be described as the shape of cord, the wide spacing cord can be represented as the vertical scales between cords, the crossed cord , broken cord and impurity can be reduced to the details of points. The belt defect can be recognized by the arrangement direction of cords. The automatic pattern recognition algorithm is designed to complete the defects detection according to the parameters of the characters of cords.(4)The design of X-ray inspection system of engineering tire is presented, which can complete the image acquisition, display, and defects detection. This system is applicable to tire with inner diameter between 23 inch and 35 inch. The X-ray inspection system has been already used in a tire manufacture factory since Feb., 2008. The defects recognition results have reached the anticipative design goals.
