| Green cutting is a modern manufacturing mode wich aims at protecting the environment against pollution and conservation of resources. It is the externalization of Sustainable Development in manufacturing and a important characteristic of 21 century. So far, there are many green cutting types and Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) is a better one. In MQL cutting, the cutting fluid is little. But its lubrication effect is very excellent. It can reduce the friction and adhesion bewteen chip-tool-workpiece, suppress the temperature rise, assure cutting quality, protect enviornment, keep tha chip and workpiece dry and shorten production time. This paper titled as "study on the mechanism of MQL and its application fundament" studied the following: the lubrication and cooling mechanism of cutting fluid in MQL cutting, the creation of spray system, the select of cutting fluid, the effect of MQL cutting and the comprehensive evaluation which involves economy, environmental protection and cutting quality of MQL. The main achievements and innovations are the following:1. Based on Tribology and Heat Transfer, study the lubrication and cooling mechanism of cutting fluid in MQL. Confirm the feasibility and availability of the excellent lubrication and coolong effect of little cutting fluid mist in MQL.2. Based on Spray and Fuid Mechanics, create MQL spray system. Analysis the atomization process, the force on droplets, the movement and the deforming of cutting fluid droplets. Test and analysis the the diameter and velocity distributiong of droplets.3. Test the biodegradable, oxidation stability, storage stability and cutting effect of tree cutting fluid (synthetic ester, vegetable oil and polyethylene glycol) and select the proper cutting fluid for MQL based on the result of analytic hierarchy process(AHP). Based on fuzzing mathematics, analysis the economical efficiency, environmental protection and cutting effect in MQL. The results shows that MQL is a safe, economic and green cutting technology. It can get better cutting effect than dry cutting and more healthy, economic than conventional wet cutting.4. Based on precision turning, test the cutting force, surface roughness, chip deformation coefficient. The results show that supplying cutting fluid from main tool flank at proper position (20mm from cutting point)can get effective lubricanting. This supply reference for select best spray parameters. Discuss and study the key problems such as best quantity of cutting fluid in metal cutting, penetration of little cutting fluid, tool wear and th availability of boundary lubrication film.etc.5. Analysis the production quality in MQL turning, MQL drilling, MQL milling and the bun produced in MQL cutting. The results show that MQL can get as good as or better quality than conventional wet cutting.This study is a important part of the subject of National Natural Science Fundation of China(No.50275066 and No.50675088), Natural Science Fundation of Jiangsu (No.BK2006077) and Key Laboratory Open Foundation of Jiangsu(No.KXJ05019).
