Due to their advantages such as low-temperature processing and treatments, higher sample homogeneity and purity, sol-gel hosts have been investigated recently as powerful matrices for rare earth luminescence. The lanthanide doped materials cover a wide range of applications in optical storage based photochemical hole-burning procedures, tunable lasers within ultra-violet and visible range, scintillator filed, hybrid coatings etc.Relative researches were concentrated on studying the emission behavior of luminescence centers in soft chemistry environment, focusing on energy transfer mechanism between hosts and metal ions using emitting center as probes, preparing samples and devices according to phases properties and special applications. The normal method was through the hydrolysis and poly-condensation process of tetravalent metal alkoxides and inside which rare earth dopants are simply performed by dissolving salts into initial sol, thus makes matrices being introduced a higher percent of hydroxyl groups, affects the resulting luminescence efficiency and balance of two phases. More seriously, the correlation between molecular structure and properties were hardly established in terms of ambiguous interfaces among organic and inorganic components. In this case, a pre-anchored approach has been chosen before ions entering the matrices, then modified ligands connect with silica network by covalent bonds, diverse ligands decide particular absorption and emission curves, finally, rare earth ions, organic molecules and backbone were combined together.Based on the above ideas and four main research directions were described briefly as follows: it is the first time to prove that amino, carboxylic, hydroxyl groups can be modified by diverse coupling agents and their photo-luminescence, morphology characterizations were accomplished. It is summarized that antenna effect existed between double functional molecules and rare earth ions and enhanced luminescence of the hybrids which are compared with common physical mixture were obtained. Furthermore, the increase of rare earth concentration was enormous. Within carboxylic groups, the coordination properties of carbonyl were studied and tn SEM graphs of picolinic acid, meta-methyl benzoic acid and 2-chloro-benzoic acid systems, a large amount of chains like structures probably caused by crystal growth have been firstly observed. It is the first time to introduce 3-(triethoxysilyl)-propyl isocyanate under the lower rim of calix[4]arene and five novel supramolecular based hybrid materials were assembled. Terbium ions has more favorable energy match with...
