| Virtual reality is a new and advanced technology that has developed in the last ten years, which is considered as one of the ten new and advanced technologies that will greatly influence human in 21st century. As the new stage of computer technology development, it presents vast application prospect. Currently, the technology has been widely applied to military affairs, aviation, medical treatment, entertainment, architecture, etc. In the foreign country, it also has been applied in coal mine field to some degree, but, in our country, it's application hardly begins. Virtual reality is a mighty complicated technology system based on computer graph theory, image progress and pattern recognition, intelligent interface technology, artificial intelligence, multi-sensor technology, voice process and sound technology, net technology, parallel process and high-powered computing. The application of the technology cannot be imagined without proper application developing tools. Coal mine in themselves are real three-dimensional geographical and geological environments. So digital mine should also be real three-dimensional geological modeling(3DGM). Coal Mine Virtual Reality System (CMVRS) is a human-computer interactive system that utilizes Visual Reality (VR) hardware devices and software to model three-dimensional coal mine space, which includes all kinds of natural entities and manual entities in coal mine. In this space users can naturally interact with virtual entities. To contribute to the digitalization of Chinese coal mine industry, this paper applies VR to traditional coal mine industry and takes comprehensive research on 3D data model and other techniques of CMVRS. The following seven questions are mainly discussed in this paper:(1)The present research status on CMVRS is analyzed in this paper. The main problems are pointed out and corresponding methods solving these problems are also proposed in this paper.(2)This paper introduces the theory, method and procedures of close-range air survey and low-aerial survey avail of large-array digital image by digital-camera, and close-range air survey and low-aerial survey test based on super-light type of plane platform. The results of test shows that large-scale surveying and mapping precision demand can be satisfied by the close-range air survey and low-aerial survey based on large-area array camera.(3)This paper advances terrain mesh simplification arithmetic based on point group deletion. It designs accordingly data structure and simplification arithmetic based on the maximal shape ratio in which feature-lines are considered.
