Product development capability is the key element which decides the competition level of enterprises, and the assembly design activities of products are very important for it. The assembly design is the result of collaboration, in which developers coming from multiple disciplines accomplish the whole design, planning and analysis task cooperatively. The research of collaborative digital pre-assembly techniques has great value in both theory and practice. It can find out and solve design and planning problems during design period, thus enterprises can win market competition by supplying products with shorter time, better quality, lower cost and better service. According to the features and technical requirement, the paper puts out the architecture of collaborative digital pre-assembly system. Then on the basis of the architecture, the techniques of digital product assembly model, assembly information exchange, and other key techniques for constructing digital assembly environment are researched respectively.The paper introduces the advanced manufacturing technology background such as digital design and manufacturing, networked collaborative product development firstly. Then the concepts of collaborative digital pre-assembly techniques are presented. Furthermore, the frame based on collaborative development environment frame is put forward. According to the analysis of the research status and development trends, the key techniques of digital pre-assemble and the research direction of the paper are put out.On the basis of the assemble information requirement of the collaborative digital pre-assembly system, this paper discusses the layered attributes of assembly information. Afterwards, a reconfigurable assembly model is created and a reconfiguration arithmetic is presented to make assembly information correct and coherent. Furthermore, the reconfigurable assembly model is described by XML, and some information reconfiguration and exchange are realized through applying XML techniques. Based on the technical requirement, a three-layer (geometry layer, kinematics layer and behavior layer) environment frame and the corresponding technical solution are given out. Also geometry information reconfiguration and behavior control methods are presented to create a visual, operable three-dimensions environment.In the end, the key techniques in this paper are illustrated by a collaborative digital pre-assembly prototype system, which is developed by COM techniques. The implementation of the prototype and application instances is also put out.
