There are more than 50 billion tons iron ore in our country, and about 2/3 of them are magnetite. At present, drum separator is still widely used as the main magnetic separator in most magnetite mineral processing plants, and this situation causes relatively low grade and recovery of iron concentrate compared with developed countries in the world.Drum separator cannot produce high-grade iron concentrate because it cannot remove the locked particles and gangue in the agglomeration formed in the process of magnetic separation. Fine screen technology can obtain relatively high grade iron concentrate, and is widely used now, but its sieving efficiency is too low to be satisfied, and finer grinding is needed. Reverse flotation technology can also achieve high grade iron concentrate, and is also widely used now, but there are a lot of urgent problems to be solved by adopting the technology, such as high production cost and serious environmental pollution, and so on. Column magnetic separator is verified to be a separator with high separating efficiency and precision in its industrial application, however, some shortcomings have been found, such as high water consumption, restricted particle size, and so on. These shortcomings limit its spreading out further, and therefore the separator should and must be improved and perfected.Among these technologies mentioned above, there is no doubt that magnetic separation is the most economical and less polluted way to treat magnetite, and therefore development of high efficient magnetic separator is the key to solve the problem of low grade concentrate.On the basis of column magnetic separator, a new type of separator—annular magnetic separator has been developed. There is a breakthrough in the structure of the separator compared with column one. It takes creatively the advantages of column separator, i.e. the new separator adapts to rough particles in its rough operation area by using electromagnet system and possesses high separating precision in its clean operation area by using the same system as column magnetic separator does.
