In this work, the photochromism of layered nickel hydroxides (α-Ni(OH)2) and nitrate-containing nickel aluminum layered double hydroxides (NiAl-NO3-LDHs) under UV-light irradiation has been observed. Based on the conception of intercalation chemistry, series of LDHs, which have photochromism or photosensitivity have been successfully synthesized, containing different organic/inorganic interlayer guests. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy (UV-vis), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR), the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) technique and elemental analysis were used to investigate the crystalline structure, chemical composition and photosensitive behavior of these layered materials.
