MgAl2O4 single crystal and transparent ceramics have excellent transmittance from ultraviolet to infrared. They have highly radiation-resistant and good mechanical properties. They are widely used in scientific research, military affairs and industry at present. In this paper, based on the task that we have taken on, the irradiation effects of transparent MgAl2O4 ceramics and single crystal in different irradiator is deeply studied, we also studied how to lower the MgAl2O4 irradiation color up capability.In this work, MgAl2O4 powder with high quality is prepared by metal alkoxide process and solid-state reaction process. The prepared powder was measured by XRD and TEM in different preparation condition, the results shows that the powder with small and narrow particle size distribution have good chemical homogeneity, high purity and non-agglomeration properties. The optimal preparation condition has been obtained during the above analysis. MgAl2O4 single crystal and transparent ceramics is prepared by Verneuil process and HIP process. The technological parameters are obtained in the process of preparation.Based on investigation of the irradiation effects of transparent ceramics, color center produced by various irradiationtreatments in spinel that has led to decrease of transmittance in this material is deeply studied analytical and experimentally.There is phase transition in the sample due to cation antisite disorder increase with high-fluence electron irradiation, V-type color center is easy saturation after electron and y rays irradiation. There is annealing effect in the sample after high dose Y -irradiation.The results of proton irradiation is different from electron and y rays irradiation. The sorts and quantities of the color center induced by proton irradiation have reference to the energy of the proton beam and have a little relation to the fluence of irradiation. The IR transmittance decreased deeply after proton irradiation.In order to improve anti-irradiation properties of MgAl2O4, doping method is carried out for the fist time. Ce: MgAlO4 have good anti-irradiation properties after X-ray irradiation. Ce doped in MgAl2O4 can also improve the transmittance of sample before irradiation. We discuss mechanisms of anti-irradiation and increase transmittance after doping Ce in this paper.In this study, transmittance spectroscopy, PAT and TL has been used to examine the behavior and the nature of defects in the spinel produced under irradiation and annealing, thermo-activation energy of color centers have also been calculated.We fulfilled the task that had collaborated with "Zhong Fei Research Institute of Synthetic Crystals " successfully during these years.
