The global apparent moisture sink is calculated by using NCAR/NCEP reanalyzed daily data for moisture and wind fields at various levels from 1950 to 2000, and with the aid of the statistical and diagnostic analysis method, the climatic characteristics of the moisture budgets over Asian-Australian monsoon (AA monsoon) region and its intraseasonal, interannual and interdecadal variations are studied. In addition, its relationship with ENSO is discussed. From the evolution of moisture sink and source over the north and south hemisphere and its associated moisture transport, we can see clearly that the moisture budgets of Asian monsoon and Australian monsoon are two partners of a complete regime. Thus, we give the definition of Asian-Australian monsoon region. It encompasses the area of (40-160°E, 30°S-30°N), including the south Indian Ocean, the land mass of Australia, the Indonesian Archipelago, Philippine, the maritime continent, the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengle, the South China Sea, the western north Pacific, the East Asia and the South Asia, et al. In boreal winter, Asian monsoon...
