There are two problem to realize the high-density culture of macroalgae in photo-bioreactor. One is to develop algal microsphere systems suitable for bioreactor cultivation; the other is to know the light delivery in algal microshphe suspension cultures.Three types of algal microsphere were developed from the clonings of Grateloupia filicina, Polysiphonia urceolata and Ulva pertusa, which are flossy, netty and fascicular respectively. The morphology developments were studies and the universality principles and methods to develop microsphere were proposed.A apparatus for detect oxygen released by photosynthesis, a crossed-gradient of temperature and light intensity cultural apparatus, a photo-bioreactor were assembled to study the photosynthetic character, culture condition, nutrition absord of algal microsphere. The corrective research methods were found. The light utility of algal microsphere was studied with fascicular microsphere of U. pertusa for its typical form. The research put emphasis on the attenuation of light in the single microsphere, which had always been neglected. A model of light attenuation in algal microshpere was erected. Only the light delivery from illuminated surface to microsphere surface combined with the inner microsphere could explain the light delivery and utility by algae in photo bioreactor. The results provided the basis of photo-bioreactor vessel design, the mode of algal cultures, high efficient utility of light and high-density culture of macroalgae.Meanwhile, the algae are valuable to aquaculture, aquatic environment remedy and natural bioactive product. The utilities of the algae on seaweed breeding, absorbing nitrogen and phosphate and producing phycobiliproteins were studied primarily, which can be used in algal cultivation, integrate-aquaculture and bioactive products widely.
