Objective:To conduct bibliometric and visual analysis on the international research status and development trend of patent foramen ovale(PFO).Methods:Using the core collection of the "web of science" database as the data source, the PFO-related literature published between 2012 and 2021 was retrieved.Use Histcite Pro software to analyze bibliometric indicators;use VOSviewer1.6.17 software to visualize the research status and development trend in this field. Results:A total of 1575 PFO related literatures published between 2012 and 2021 were retrieved. The United States leads the field with the highest number of publications and local citations(LCS).Author Thaler DE has the highest publication volume and LCS and is a high-quality author in the field. The journal with the highest LCS is "NEW ENGL J MED",which is the core journal in this field.Institution Univ Penn is a leader in this field. The co-occurrence analysis of co-cited literature by VOSviewer1.6.17 software and drawing visual atlas show that the research topics in this field are PFO with anatomical features, and PFO with treatment. The out co-occurrence analysis of keywords in articles and abstracts by VOSviewer1.6.17 software and draws a visual map, which shows that PFO-related research is divided into three research directions, including clinical surgical treatment,PFO-related research with unexplained stroke and PFO-related research with migraine. The research trend has developed from the anatomy, pathogenesis and complications of PFO in the early stage to the effectiveness and adverse consequences of different treatment methods of PFO in the near future. Conclusions:The optimal treatment method for PFO is a key research direction in the future, and further research is still needed by relevant scholars.
