Objective: To compare the effect of different preparation diameters on the removal of smear layer in curved root canals by PUI(Passive Ultrasonic Irrigation),sonic activation(EDDY)and XP-endo Finisher(XPF).Methods: The 72 mandibular molars with a curvature of 10 to 40°were divided into group A(0.25mm),Group B(0.30mm)and Group C(0.35mm)according to different preparatory diameters,and each group was divided into 3 subgroups with different root canal irrigation methods: A1 group,A2 group and A3 group,B1 group,B2 group and B3 group,C1 group,C2 group and C3 group,each group with 2% Naocl solution and 17% EDTA solution swing wash for 60 s.The groupings are as follows:Group A1 is prepared to 0.25 mm,EDDY;Group A2 is prepared to 0.25 mm,XPF;Group A3 is prepared to 0.25 mm,PUI;Group B1 is prepared to 0.30 mm,EDDY;Group B2 is prepared to 0.30 mm,XPF;Group B3 is prepared to 0.30 mm,PUI;Group C1 is prepared to 0.35 mm,EDDY;Group C2 is prepared to 0.35 mm,XPF;Group C3 is prepared to 0.35 mm,PUI.After root canal irrigation,the mesial root was split along the buccal-lingual longitudinal direction,and analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM)with magnification of 3000 to evaluate the removal effect of stain layer.SPSS Statistics19.0 was used for nonparametric analysis of variance and Mann-Whitney test to determine the difference between subgroups Results:(1)Comparison of cleaning effects of different rinsing methods of the same terminal widthThe terminal width is 0.25mm: EDDY and XPF have a significant effect on removing the tarnishing layer of the near-middle root tip and middle root of the mandibular molars than PUI(p<0.05),and the cleaning effect of EDDY and XPF is consistent(p>0.05).The terminal width is 0.30mm: XPF removal of the puncture layer of the near middle root of the mandibular molars is similar to the effect of EDDY or PUI(p>0.05),and the EDDY flushing effect is better than that of PUI(p<0.05);EDDY and XPF are more effective than PUI in removing the tarnish layer of the middle middle root near the middle root of the mandibular molars(p<0.05),and the cleaning effect of EDDY and XPF is consistent(p>0.05).The terminal width is 0.35mm: EDDY,XPF and PUI are consistent with the removal of the tarnish layer near the middle root tip and the middle root of the mandibular molars(p>0.05).(2)Comparison of cleaning effects of different terminal widths of the same flushing methodDifferent terminal widths had no effect on EDDY and XPF cleaning of the near-middle root tip or middle root tarnishing layer of mandibular molars(p>0.05),and for PUI cleaning the near-middle root tip and middle root tarnishing layer of mandibular molars when preparing to 0.25 or 0.30mm(p>0.05),while the cleaning effect of PUI prepared to 0.35 was significantly better than that of 0.25 and 0.30(p<0.05).Conclusions:EDDY and XPF remove the irrigation layer in the curved root canal better than or similar to PUI;use EDDY or XPF to clean the mandibular molars near the middle root at least to 0.25 size,and PUI swing to wash the bent root canal at least to 0.35 size to maximize the cleaning effect.Neither flushing method can completely remove the irrigation layer.
