Objective To observe the association between serum magnesium levels and left ventricular mass index(Left Ventricular Mass Index,LVMI)in patients with maintain hemodialysis. Methods A total of 113 hemodialysis patients were recruited for this clinical study.Left ventricular diastolic diameter(LVDd)and interventricular septal thickness(IVST)and left ventricular posterior wall thickness(IVPWT)were performed via color Doppler echocardiography,LVMI was calculated according to Devereux formula. The association between serum magnesium levels and other indicators was analyzed using SPSS 20.0 software. Results Compared with non-LVH patients(n=66),LVH patients(n=47)had lower serum magnesium levels(P=0.002),longer dialysis vintage, higher serum phosphorus levels, higher parathyroid hormone levels(P<0.05)and more patients with hypertension before hemodialysis(P=0.025).Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that serum magnesium concentration was a significant independent negative factor associated with the LVMI in hemodialysis patients(P=0.006,β=-0.049,OR=0.952),and dialysis vintage(P=0.012,β=0.014,OR=1.014),serum phosphorus levels(P=0.019,β =0.098,OR=1.333),history of hypertension before hemodialysis(P=0.004,β=1.422,OR=4.146)appear positive correlation to LVMI.There is no significant difference in other parameters between the two groups(P>0.05).Conclusion Low serum magnesium is associated with LVMI in long-term hemodialysis patients.Correcting low serum magnesium levels may retard or regress the occurrence and development of left ventricular hypertrophy. |
