Research On The Image And Identity Of Patients With Mental Disorders In Chinese Popular Newspapers（2015-2019）

Based on the Wisers database,this research selects comprehensive news about mental disorders on Chinese popular newspapers from 2015 to 2019.By cyclic isometric sampling,1030 reports are finally selected for content analysis and text analysis.The results found that Chinese popular newspapers has increased the promotion of mental disorders year by year in the near five years,and related negative reports and labels have tended to decrease.The Chinese popular press has made some efforts to spread information and reduce the stigma about mental disorders.However,the number of reports is yearly decreasing.The newspapers are still focus on the curiosity topics such as patients causing accidents,survival status and self-harm.Besides,the number of negative reports is three times that of positive reports.Over 60% of the reports set issues after the sixth page,and in-depth reports on mental disorders issues are less than 10%.There are obvious short-term,event oriented and superficial problems in the reports.Chinese popular newspapers do not pay enough attention to mental disorders issues.The popular newspapers mainly constructed four images of patients with mental disorder,"violent man","the weak","the others" and "strong man".They paid too much attention to the negative images of patients,while positive image reports are very few,less than 10%.In the process of image construction,there has problems of stigmatization,labeling,and stereotyping.Under the social division of labor,gender discipline and social role expectations,male patients are more violent,and female patients are more depressed.The married rate and childbearing rate of men are significantly lower than that of women.Thus,the fertility of female patients is the greatest value of marriage.Finally,in order to create a tolerant and loving public opinion environment and reduce social discrimination against mental disorders,this article makes some suggestions for the popular newspapers to report on mental disorders issues,summarizes the deficiencies of this research and makes some research prospects,so as to provide a little bit references for more in-depth research in the future.
