Objective: This study aims to analyze the incidence and pathological characteristics of tumors of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses in Qinghai area, and to investigate the risk factors for malignant tumors of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses,so as to provide references for early-stage prediction and standard diagnosis and treatment of tumors of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses in Qinghai area. Methods:Baseline characteristics and clinical data of 526 patients with pathologically diagnosed tumors of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses in the Affiliated Hospital of Qinghai University,Qinghai Provincial People’s Hospital, and Qinghai Red Cross Hospital from January 2015 to December 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. They were divided to benign group and malignant group according to the pathological classification of tumors, and their specific pathological characteristics between groups were analyzed.Results:1.Among 526 recruited patients,345(65.6%)were males and 181(34.4%)were females, with the median age of onset 50 years(2-85 years). There were 349(66.3%)patients with the Han nationality,88(16.7%)with the Zang nationality,67(12.7%)with the Hui nationality,15(2.9%)with the Mongolian nationality and 7(1.3%)with the Tu nationality.According to the pathological classification,349(66.3%)patients had benign tumors, involving 176(50.4%)cases with inverted papilloma,113(32.4%)with hemangioma,17(4.9%)with osteoma,16(2.6%)with fibroma,7(2.0%)with pleomorphic adenoma and 20(5.7%)with other types.Among 177(33.7%)patients with malignant tumors, there were 61(34.5%)cases with squamous cell carcinoma,41(23.2%)with lymphoma,32(18.1%)with malignant melanoma,19(10.7%)with adenoid cystic carcinoma,6(3.4%)with olfactory neuroblastoma and 18(10.2%)with other types.2.There were significant differences in the history of nasal surgery, nose bleeding, facial numbness, eyeball swelling and pain, smoking history, altitude of residence and age between benign group and malignant group(all P<0.05).3.Nose bleeding, facial numbness, smoking history, altitude of residence and age were risk factors for malignant tumors of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses in Qinghai area(P<0.05).Conclusions:1.Pathological subtypes of tumors of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses in Qinghai area are diverse and complicated, and the inverted papilloma and the squamous cell carcinoma are the most-common subtype of benign and malignant tumors of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses,respectively.2.Older people are susceptible to malignant tumors of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, and smoking also increases the risk of malignant tumors of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses.
