BackgroundTo understand the psychological status of patients and to study whether there is a difference between the patients with unilateral and bilateral microtia.MethodsA cross-sectional survey was conducted of 70 patients with congenital microtia(54 cases of unilateral 16 cases of bilateral).Three internationally common questionnaires, were used in the study, which were Child Self-Awareness Scale(PHCSS),the Child Loneliness Scale(CLS)and the Child Social Anxiety Scale(SASC).And the results of two groups were compared to the standard Chinese norms.ResultsAll 70 microtia patients completed three questionnaires. The average PHCSS scores of patients with unilateral and bilateral microtia were 54.1 ± 12.0 and 51.0± 14.1,respectively,and there was no significant difference between the two groups(P>0.05).The PHCSS score of bilateral patients was significantly lower than that of normal children, and there were significant differences between patients with unilateral microtia and normal children in subscales of physical appearance, unilateral and bilateral integration, and bilateral happiness and satisfaction(P<0.05).The average CLS scores were 50.2±14.7 and 61.4±13.5,respectively,and there was no significant difference between the two groups(P>0.05).More than half of unilateral and bilateral patients scored higher than 8 points. The average SASC scores were 5.20±4.15 and 6.75±4.0,there was no significant difference between the two groups(P>0.05).The total SASC score, social avoidance and distress of patients of microtia were different from those of normal Chinese children, and the subscale of fear of negative evaluation in patients with unilateral microtia were significantly different from normal children(P<0.05).ConclusionsThe self-awareness of patients with bilateral microtia was significantly lower than that of normal children, and there is no significant difference between patients with unilateral and patients with bilateral microtia.More than half patients with microtia felt loneliness, and patients with bilateral microtia felt more severe than patients with unilateral microtia.Patients with microtia showed social anxiety compared with normal children, and there was no significant difference between the two patients groups.
