A Study On Three Translated Versions Of Synopsis Of The Golden Chamber Based On Poly-System Theory

The study is based on the theory of "Poly-system",referring to the position of TCM in the target language readers’ country,taking the the original version of Synopsis of Golden Chamber and the translated versions of Luo Xiwen,Ruan Jiyuan and Li Zhaoguo as samples,and analyzes translation strategies of TCM terms positing in center of western medical system,the half-center of medical system and the edge of medical system in the 1980s,the early 21st century and the 21st century respectively,which clarifies the application scene of the primary translating type and the secondary translating type.In this study,262 TCM terms were selected and according to their description natures,and divided into six categories:66 basics of human body,29 etiology,21 syndromes,60 symptoms,76 diseases names and 10 treatment methods.Here Excel was applied for demonstrating adopting frequency of patterns above.In conclusion:All translated versions are "primary secondary translation mode" dominated;more specifically,the cultural maintenance of"basics of human body" are rising,the understandability of "symptoms","diseases name" and"treatment methods" are constantly increasing,while "etiology" and "symptoms" are stable which stress comprehension of targeted readers.The English translation strategy of synopsis of the Golden Chamber can be summarized as follows:①as the articles at the center of the system,"the advanced secondary translation model" to maximize the cultural connotation of traditional Chinese medicine is preferable;②as the articles at the half-center of the system,"the elementary secondary translation model "or"elementary secondary combined primary translation model "should be adopted as much as possible;③as the articles at the edge of the system,the elementary secondary mode "or"elementary secondary combined primary translation mode " are to be adopted.In specific use,dynamic nature of the system is worth noting,which means it exposes to corresponding translation mode with such variant elements as branching systems,different time and place of context to better authentic culture of TCM.
