Effect Of Parenting Stress,Coping Style And Perceived Social Support Of The Parents Of Short Stature In Children

Objective:To observe the effect of parenting stress,coping style and perceived social support in the parents of short stature of children.Methods:A total of 434 parents of short stature of children in four tertiary hospitals in Fujian were included in this cross-sectional study.All respondents were tested using Parenting Stress IndexShort Form(PSI-SF),Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire(SCSQ),and Perceived Social Support Scale(PSSS)respectively.Results:1.The PSI-SF total scores were 88.47 ±17.97 and the high-level parenting stress accounts for 46.54%.The three subscales scores,namely parental distress,parent-child dysfunctional Interaction and difficult child were 31.61±7.42,26.13±6.78 and 30.73±7.98 respectively.2.Statistically significant differences were found in parental age,education degree,family monthly earning,with or without participant in the care and numbers of children(P<0.05),logistic regression analysis showed the OR and 95%CI of parental age(31-35),education degree(bachelor),education degree(master’s degree or above)and with participant in the care is1.936(95%CI 1.003～3.727),0.525(95%CI 0.286～0.964),OR 0.078(95%CI 0.017～0.371)and OR 2.398(95%CI 1.521～3.779)respectively.3.The total SCSQ were 22.97±6.71 for positive coping and 9.82±4.53 for negative coping.Statistically significant differences were found between the 112 cases of high level parenting stress with negative coping and the 127 cases of moderate level parenting stress with positive coping(P<0.05).4.The PSSS total scores were 60.85±10.50 and the high perceived social support accounts for 50.23%.The three subscales scores,namely family,friends,and a significant Other were21.34±4.01,19.90±3.81 and 19.60±3.92 respectively.5.Coping style is a part mediator in parenting stress and perceived social support,but it is stronger in parenting stress(-0.072)than in perceived social support(-0.06).Conclusion:1.It suggests majority of the parents of children with short stature may have high level of parenting stress.2.Parental age,education degree,family monthly earning,with or without participant in the care and numbers of children influence parenting stress.3.Positive coping and improve social support may decreased the level of parenting stress in the parents of short stature of children.
