Endophytic fungal(Epichlo? bromicola)symbionts of wild barley(Hordeum brevibulatum)are a kind of common grass endophytic fungal symbionts in North China. In this paper, wild barley(H.brevisubulatum cv.Hexi),a new wild cultivated forage for ecological restoration and forage in Lanzhou University, was used along with the controls Elymus sibiricus and Puccinellia distans to evaluate the salt tolerance of its seeds and seedlings and the nutritional quality under the condition of field growth conditions were studied. The main results are as follows:1)The salt tolerance of wild barley seeds at germination stage was better than E.sibiricus and P.distans.Germination and growth indexes such as seed germination rate, germination potential, vigor index, fresh weight of embryo, fresh weight of radicle and length of radicle were decreased with the increment of salt concentration.Under different salt concentrations(0,100,200,300 and 400 m M),the germination rate of wild barley seeds was significantly higher than E.sibiricus and P.distans(P<0.05),while the relative salt damage rate was significantly lower than the controls(P<0.05).The germination rate of wild barley was increased by 84.31%,88% and 43.14%,72%,respectively,while the relative salt damage rate was decreased by 39.54%,41.60% and8.21%,30.36%,respectively,under the treatments of 300 and 400 m M.Besides, the seed viability index, germ and radicle fresh weight of wild barley were significantly higher than E.sibiricus and P.distans(P<0.05).The seed vigor index of wild barley was increased by 28.03%,62.02% and 10.83%,42.64%,respectively.2)Under the greenhouse potting conditions, the salt tolerance and nutritional quality of wild barley in the seedling stage were better than E.sibiricus, but there was no significant difference from P.distans.Salt stress significantly reduced the plant height, dry weight, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, crude fiber and detergent fiber content of seedlings(P<0.05),but significantly increased the crude protein, nitrogenfree extract and relative feeding value(P<0.05).The root length of wild barley seedlings was increased by 32.80%,22.34%,and 27.70%,29.57%,respectively,while the dry weight of the shoots increased by 32.89%,35.44% and 48.82%,38.75%,respectively,under the treatment of 300 m M and 400 m M in comparison with E.sibiricus and P.distans.The crude protein of wild barley was increased by 20.22% and 19.98%compared to E.sibiricus, but decreased by 12.79% and 10.90% compared to P.distans.The relative feeding value of wild barley was increased by 9.25%,16.85% and 1.94%,9.19%,respectively,compared to controls. The neutral detergent fiber of wild barley seedlings was decreased by 5.26% and 13.19%,and the acid detergent fiber was decreased by 18.56% and 29.39% respectively compared with E.sibiricus, without showing any significant difference when compared to P.distans.3)The nutrient composition and forage quality of wild barley were better than E.sibiricus and P.distans under saline-alkali soil cultivation conditions. The tiller number and shoot dry weight were increased by 14.07%,19.81% and 40.89%,47.70%,respectively,compared to both the controls at heading stages. The total nitrogen, phosphorus and sodium ions in wild barley were significantly higher than controls(P<0.05).The crude protein content and relative feeding value were also significantly higher than E.sibiricus and P.distans(P<0.05),but the crude fiber, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber contents were significantly lower than E.sibiricus and P.distans(P<0.05).The total nitrogen content of wild barley at heading stage was increased by 41.91% and 52.78%,while the total phosphorus content was increased by8.30% and 38.87%,respectively,compared to controls. The crude protein content and the relative feeding value were increased by 41.87%,52.71%,and 19.15%,9.84%,respectively,while the crude fiber content was decreased by 31.44% and 27.89%.
