Abstract/Summary:
The addition of polymer to injected water increases the viscosity of the water, which enhances the volumetric sweep efficiency during secondary oil recovery. The viscosity of the injected phase, however, decreases as it flows further from the injection well due to degradation mechanisms. It is, therefore, important to find an apparent viscosity for the polymer solution during injection to properly evaluate displacement performance and facilitate production forecast.;This paper offers a new method to determine the apparent viscosity for polymer solution during injection using pressure transient analysis fall off test. The apparent viscosity of ten polymer-flooding cases are predicted and compared with that obtained from computer model simulations. The impact of fluid compressibility ratios and ratio of oil to polymer on the apparent viscosity of injected polymer are also investigated.;Results were consistent with previous findings, which suggest a decrease in viscosity of injected polymer with improvement in degradation mechanisms. The results also showed (1) an increase in viscosity with increase in polymer concentration, (2) an increase in viscosity with increase in ratio of oil to polymer compressibility and (3) a reduction in apparent viscosity with increase in ratio of polymer radius to oil radius.
