Information management is critical to the success of any construction project. Discipline-specific models contribute to misinterpretation of information and increasingly result in construction site errors and rework. The primary objective of this research is to integrate 3D-CAD model with the information management system (IMS) to enable automated quantity take-off from the 3D-CAD model and share project information from various disciplines. The proposed methodology has been incorporated into a computer system that integrates IMS with 3D-CAD model through a central database. The storage of project data in a central database allows all the project participants to access historic and current data in a central location, ensuring consistency, integrity, and accuracy. This research complements the previous effort by the construction engineering and management group at University of Alberta in collaboration with an industrial partner from Edmonton, Canada. A case study is presented to illustrate the essential features of the developed system. |
