The focus of this clinical dissertation was the stigma and barriers attached to seeking mental health services among the Hispanic/Latino population. A large percentage of Hispanic/Latinos residing in the United States do not utilize mental health services. This doctoral thesis critically reviewed the literature on the topic of stigma and barriers attached to seeking mental health services among the Hispanic/Latino population. It also includes a summary of findings from interviews with five professionals who have experience working with this specific population. The clinical information from the literature review and the interviews with professionals were integrated into the construction of the formal power-point presentation which was delivered to a group of mental health clinicians, practicum, and pre-doctoral interns in order to enhance their knowledge, skills, and awareness on this issue. Additional suggestions were offered in order to reduce the gap between research and services available pertaining to this topic, as well as the discussion of the study's limitations and its implications. |
