The relationship between people and land is very unbalanced, with more population and less land, along with 1/3 of the average carrying capacity of cultivated land in the world. With the development of urbanization in Zhaohua district, the living standards of rural residents has been greatly improved. In order to improve the living environment, many rural residents are rushing to build new houses, the number of rural settlements have increased year by year, rural residential construction in a state of disorderly construction, resulting in a large number of arable land occupied. The problems such as large per capita rural residential land and scattered spatial layout of rural settlements are obvious thus the contradiction between people and land is increasingly acute. Therefore,it is of great practical significance to improve the living quality of rural residents, improve the appearance of villages, adhere to the red line of cultivated land, promote poverty alleviation and rural revitalization, through evaluating the intensive land use in rural residential areas and carrying out the land consolidation.Based on the research results and experience at home and abroad, this paper takes 11 towns and villages in the southern Zhaohua district as the research objects, many research methods such as field investigation, system analysis, quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis and other research methods were employed to evaluate the level of rural residential intensive land use in the southern Zhaohua district,to provide the basis and reference for the government to compile the overall land use plan and determine the index of rural residential areas.Based on the economic and social situation of Zhaohua district, the current situation and existing problems of land use in rural residential areas were analyzed. In accordance with the data of land use status in Zhaohua district and the field investigation, the rural residential areas in the study area account for a large proportion in the construction land, and the utilization of rural residential areas has the following characteristics: Large quantity and scattered layout, large area of per capita and household settlements, and widespread abandonment and vacancy in rural residential areas.Supported by ArcGIS and other technologies, landscape pattern index method was adopted to select landscape pattern indicators from 3 aspects including the scale, spatial distribution and morphological characteristics of residential areas.Taking towns and villages as the unit, the spatial layout characteristics of the rural residential areas in southern Zhaohua district were analyzed. The results show that the rural residential areas in the study area show the characteristics of small scale and scattered spatial distribution as a whole.Taking into account the previous research, based on the current situation and spatial layout features of rural residential areas in southern Zhaohua district, the factors affecting the intensive utilization of rural residential areas were comprehensively analyzed, including environment and location factors, social and economic factors and land use factors. The factors of natural environment and location condition are mainly altitude, slope, traffic condition and water source condition. The social and economic factors are mainly the level of regional economic development, the level of urbanization, the population density of rural settlements and the proportion of the rural permanent resident population, and the land use factors mainly include the residential area per capita(household),the carrying capacity of cultivated land and the carrying capacity of ecological land.Based on the analysis of the spatial distribution characteristics of rural settlements in towns and villages and the influencing factors of intensive utilization, the evaluation index system of intensive utilization of rural residential areas is established by selecting indexes from 4 levels of compact spatial layout, land use intensity, land input intensity and land output benefit, and then the rationality of the evaluation index system was tested. The maximum difference dormalization method was used to standardize the index data, and the coefficient of variation method was used to determine the weight of each index.Taking the towns and villages as the evaluation unit, the multi-factor comprehensive evaluation method was used tto calculate the intensive utilization index of rural residential areas, the intensive utilization level of rural residential areas in study area is partitioned. The result of intensive utilization level zoning is as: the towns with higher intensive level include Hutiao town and Taigong town;there are 5 towns and villages in the lower intensive level, including Zhangjia town and so on;there are 4 towns and villages in extremely low intensive level area, including Huanglong town and so on.The overall level of intensive utilization of the residential areas in the study area is low and the spatial difference between towns and villages is large. Finally, per capita construction land standard method is used to calculate the theoretical potential of intensive utilization of rural residential areas in study towns and villages between 2016-2025,the theoretical potential is modified by the correction coefficient to measure the practical potential of rural residential areas, and the real potential is partitioned to provide the basis for the arrangement of rural residential areas in the southern Zhaohua district.Potential zoning result is as: first-class potential area towns include Bolingou town and two other towns;there are 5 towns in the secondary potential area, including Huanglong town and so on;there are 3 towns in the tertiary potential area, including Hutiao town and so on.
