Backgrounds:Outline of innovation Development for traditional Chinese Medicine(2006-2020)noted that one of the basic tasks of the innovation development for traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)is to realize the internationalization of TCM,therefore the theory and practice,services and products,the unique healthcare rehabilitation pattern and the value of TCM can gradually get understanding and acceptance by the international community.In order to achieve the aims above,it is necessary to cultivate students'foreign language ability in the medical field.Therefore,advanced requirements especially developing students'listening and speaking ability are raised for TCM English teaching.TCM English textbooks for listening and speaking with high quality play an important role in TCM English teaching,so it is necessary to conduct a study on TCM English textbooks for listening and speaking.Objectives:This study aims at analyzing the features of the textbook TCM English An Audio Visual&Oral Course and probing into the real needs of learners and specialists for TCM English textbooks for listening and speaking through a questionnaire survey and interview respectively.Based on these two aspects,this study compares the features of the book with the needs of learners and specialists,summarizes the merits and demerits of the book,and provides suggestions for the compilation of TCM English textbooks for listening and speaking.Methods:The research methods of this study mainly include text analysis and survey(questionnaire and interview).(1)Text analysisThe textbook TCM English An Audio Visual&Oral Course was analyzed from four aspects including content design,teaching material selection,learning task design and auxiliary materials.(2)Survey? QuestionnaireA questionnaire was conducted to107 students,collecting the information about basic situation of students' language learning and their needs for TCM English textbook for listening and speaking(content design,listening material selection,learning task design).? InterviewSemi-structured interviews were conducted with three experts with experiences of TCM English teaching and textbook compilation.Some information was obtained,including their satisfactions for TCM E,nglish An Audio Visual&Oral Course,their understandings for the current situation of TCM English textbook for listening and speaking,the problems they had encountered during the utilization and compilation of TCM English An Audio Visual&Oral Course and the corresponding suggestions for these problems,and their understandings towards the characteristics of TCM English textbook for listening and speaking.Results:(1)Text analysis resultsThrough text analysis,it was found that TCM English An Audio Visual&Oral Course had the following characteristics;most components in the content design were considered except for learning goals and after-school tasks;the listening materials were varied with authenticity,and adapted from written texts mostly;the tasks of the textbook were diversified,contained more listening comprehension tasks and less oral tasks,lacked pre-listening and transfer tasks with innovation for solving problems;the auxiliary materials of the textbook helped students to understand the listening materials well,but lacked the teacher's books and failed to make full use of network resources.(2)Survey results? Questionnaire survey resultsThrough the questionnaire survey,it was found that the majority of students hoped that the authentic listening materials that were adapted should be chosen,vocabulary and sentence patterns should be paid more attention to,pre-listening and problem-solving tasks with strong interactivity can be added,and the development of non-verbal competence such as students'professional quality should be focused on for TCM English textbooks for learning and speaking.? Interview resultsThrough interviews to experts,it was found that TCM English An Audio Visual&Oral Course was practical,interesting and contained various and authentic teaching materials and tasks,but it still had some disadvantages including unfocused key and difficult points,written materials selection,the lack of pre-listening,after-class and oral practices,inconsistence between the difficulty of teaching material and students' language level.Therefore,the following methods including specifying teaching objectives,the key and difficulties points,choosing authentic and oral material or adapting written materials,designing pre-listening and after-class tasks,increasing oral tasks properly were put forward by the experts to solve the problems.Conclusion:Based on the analysis for TCM English An Audio Visual&Oral Course and the needs of students and experts,this study put forward the following suggestions for TCM English books for listening and speaking:(1)Making the textbook more targeted based on the needs of learners;(2)Enhancing the authenticity of teaching materials to achieve successful commication;(3)Balancing the input and output ratio of the language based on language application;(4)Developing multi-dimensional textbooks with the opportunity of multimedia development;(5)Focusing on non-linguistic factors to improve the overall quality of learners.Contribution:TCM English textbooks for listening and speaking are of gr eat importance to cultivate students'foreign language ability in the medical field and promote the internationalization of TCM.Through the text analysis,questionnaire survey and experts interview,this paper summarizes the merits and demerits of TCM English An Audio Visual&Oral Course,and enriches the research methods of TCM English textbooks.Besides,based on the evaluation of TCM English An Audio Visual&Oral Course,this paper puts forward some suggestions for TCM English books for listening and speaking,thus opens a window to the research on TCM English books for listening and speaking,enriches the research system for ESP textbooks from the perspective of TCM English books.
