A Study On Analysis Of The Self-presentation Of The Role Of Journalists In Ethical Dilemma By The Potter Box

In our society,people play different roles.When people participate in social interaction,sometimes their roles may be different with their real intentions and values.The fundamental professional requirements of journalists are being accurate,prompt,comprehensive and objective,while in daily work,many questions and situations make it impossible for them to participate as ordinary people,for example,the situation of facing pain and death.If journalists intend to record reality,they must record objectively and neutrally without any assistance.When journalists make judgments with professional roles,their judgments may be totally different from their real points of views.So whether comply with the values and rules of professional roles or follow personal values and general ethical principles becomes the ethical dilemma that confuses journalists.The ethical dilemma refers to moral divergences,and is the concentrated reflection of conflicts between different moral values and moral requirements within the same moral system.This dilemma is the difficult choice for people to make,and people are confuse with whether to choose righteousness or kindness.Face with complex moral situations and overlapping moral values,it is difficult for people to make choices and distinguish the most important point,since it's impossible to make choices that satisfy all of their moral requirements.The Potter Box is a kind of moral reasoning model,and journalists can analyze ethical dilemma they are faced with according to its framework and behave reasonably.The Potter Box outlines an organic circulation system with the dual characteristics of “practice-spirit” in a simple and clear way.Though the procedures of framework are independent and separate,they are closely related and organically linked.In the process of redefining and seeking truth,journalists can analyze the fundamental causes of divergence,and all aspects of events could be illustrated with more details for more reasonable action.This thesis is based on “The Potter Box”,demonstrating with in-depth interviews and case analyses from the perspective of journalists.Firstly,this thesis empirically defines and analyzes the reasons of journalists' moral dilemma using the drama theory,and correctly illustrates journalists' situations.Then from journalists' views of points,this thesis analyzes the views of journalists when they make decisions,and giving orientation references based on their judgments of values.Finally,this thesis sets norms of journalists in accordance with journalists' loyal objects.This thesis aims to give journalists who face ethical dilemma a way of thinking and methodological solutions.
