The Visual Presentation About The Chinese Images In Covers Of China Pictorial From The Perspective Of Multimodal Discourse Analysis

As one of the national media,magazines play an important role of communicating,and its cover‘s significant is self-evident.About the standards of selecting the cover,China Pictorial's president and chief editor Xu Bu once said:there are three standards,the first one is bright and beautiful,the second one is thoughtprovoking,the third one is distinctive,These standards not only pay a great attention to the form,but also focus on the pursuit of differences.So,as the English version of China Pictorial,what kind of image will be presented above the standards? what kind of visual communication characteristics can be discovered? How's the effect?This thesis,with 325 samples selected from The China Pictorial's front covers as its data and the theoretical framework of multimodal discourse analysis as its basic analytic tool,presents a detailed multimodal discourse analysis on the selected front covers to explore it's representational,interactive and compositional meanings.In addition,in order to further analyze the evolution of the Chinese image,this article puts the cover of the figure in three stages of China's external communication and attempts to find out its appearance through the image change and analysize the reasons behind,in order to provide inspiration and reference for China's practice of international communication.The study finds that the visual representation of the Chinese people's image under the perspective of ‘reappearing significance' is vivid,fixed,and rich in each phase.The ‘interactive meaning'changes from ‘remote'to‘approach' and then to ‘middle'.The flexibility of the‘composition'continued to improve from 1978 to 2016.Taking the characteristics of the characters reflected at each stage into account,author summarizes the overall changes into three aspects like social identity changes,personality changes as well as changes in the character of women,and analyze the causes of the changes.In addition,this article integrates the advantages and disadvantages of the cover's visual presentation,providing insprirations on China's external communication practice like establishing a sense of ‘harmony' between multimodal discourses,injecting emotion into visual text,paying attention to the role of various visual elements and so on.
