With the advancement of information technology especially the advent of the Internet, new media forms spring up providing Chinese-language media professionals in Australia with excellent opportunities to further develop their media business.Previous research focused much on the development of Chinese-language media in traditional media forms especially newspapers and magazines, yet the 2000 s has witnessed Australian Chinese-language media's use of new media channels. This paper explores the recent development of Australian Chinese-language media in the new media era, when “We Media” particularly WeChat and Weibo have been widely employed to extend media influence. With accordance to Harold Lasswell's 5W communication formula, this thesis first analyzes the communication act between Chinese-language media and Chinese migrants in Australia. In the second place, the paper traces those practices that Chinese-language media outlets have made to adjust to the new media time in particular their use of Chinese social media like WeChat and Weibo.Last but not the least,a preliminary analysis of Chinese-language media outlets' WeChat application has been made through a comparative study of two cases: Media Today Group and Aus Insider. The significance of the thesis lies in the following parts: first,a discussion of the dynamic development of Chinese-language media in the new media era;second,an exploration of the role of WeChat in connecting Chinese migrants and Chinese-language media in Australia;third,a study of the WeChat practices of Chinese-language media outlets including problems and challenges they have encountered and corresponding suggestions for solution.
