The rapid development and the wide application of information technology has strongly impact on the production of human life all the time, all kinds of electronic products and software system has penetrated across industry.Human-Machine Interaction has become the bridge of communication between human beings and computers. As the most common idiomatic usage in the man-machine interface, the operation of Human-Machine Interaction is mainly composed by menu, its availability greatly affected the experience of the final user, and the development of menus are important to improve the overall usability of the whole computer. This paper makes study of the one-dimensional menu, which is most common in Human-Machine Interaction. On the basis of Fitts' s law and Hick's law,it proposes a new prediction model for menu usability. The model solves the problems that applicable range is narrow ? the prediction results are not accurate of existing prediction models. It provides not only a rapid and effective method for researchers of user interface, but also reliable predication for the subsequent design of menu.Firstly,by analyzing the research and development of domestic and foreign Human-Machine Interaction usability, this paper put forward three factors while affect menu performance: Menu dimension?user professional knowledge and task difficulty coefficient.By analyzing these factors influence on the usability of menu, this paper modified the Hick's model, and then on the basis of Fitts' s law and new Hick's law,it proposes a new prediction model for menu usability(UPMM).Secondly,in order to verify the validity of the prediction model, this paper designed experiments to test usability of human-computer interface menu.Regression analysis of the observed data through experiment and the predicted data through the model yields a high correlation. Finally, the model is applied to the actual systems. This paper redesign the traditional menus, the new “ morphing” menu not only combines with the characteristics of frequency-split menu, but also adjusts the spatial position of menu items. And the experimental results show that the usability of “morphing” menu is higher than the existing major of menus.
