Being pregnant is an important topic for professional women. This study focuses on the behavioral outcomes and the underlying mechanisms that may result from changes in the fertility desire of working women.According to the impression management theory and conservation of resources(COR)theory,we assume that the change of fertility desire of female employees is related to their impression management motives, which will further influence their behaviors, such as task performance, voice behaviors, helping behaviors and ingratiation behaviors. We further assume that the family-supportive supervisor behaviors perceived by female employees moderate the relationship between fertility desire and impression management motives.Data was collected from 172 female employees and their immediate supervisors through questionnaires of three times, and divided into three types according to the fertility desire of female employees. There are 67 pairs of data with no fertility planning,50 pairs of data with fertility planning and 55 pairs of data with pregnancy. The independent variables and dependent variables are rated by the employees and their matched leaders respectively. The fertility desire and family-supportive supervisory behaviors are rated by the employees. The task performance, voice behaviors, helping behaviors, ingratiation behaviors and impression management motives are rated by the employee-matched leader in two different times. The leaders evaluated the employee's impression management motives in the Time2 questionnaire, and evaluated the employee's task performance, voice behaviors, helping behaviors and ingratiation behaviors in the Time3 questionnaire. We use the PROCESS method of Preacher and Hayes(2004)to examine the relationship between fertility desire and its behavioral outcomes, and also explore the mediation of impression management motives and the moderation of family-supportive supervisor behaviors. The conclusions are as follows:(1)Female employees' fertility desire is positively related to impression management motives;(2)Impression management motives can mediate the relationship between female employees' fertility desire and their task performance, voice behaviors, helping behaviors and ingratiation behaviors;(3)Family-supportive supervisor behaviors can moderate the positive relationship between female employees' fertility desire and impression management motives. For female employees who perceive lower levels of family-supportive supervisor behaviors, the positive relationship between female employees' fertility desire and impression management motives is significantly strengthened.(4)Family-supportive supervisor behaviors can moderate the mediating effect of impression management motives between female employees' fertility desire and their task performance, voice behaviors, helping behaviors and ingratiation behaviors. When female employees perceive lower levels of family-supportive supervisor behaviors, the mediating effect of impression management motives is more significant. However, when female employees perceive higher levels of family-supportive supervisor behaviors, the mediating effect of impression management motives is not significant.
