From time immemorial, the African Continent has been bedeviled by conflicts of varying magnitudes.Almost every country in Africa has had its fair share of economic, environmental, and social challenges which have resulted in a series of inter and intra state conflicts. From 1945 to date, the UN has been involved in either settling international disputes through peaceful negotiations, preventing the escalating of conflicts into wars through Preventive Diplomacy,Peacekeeping,Peacemaking,Peace-enforcement as well as Peace-building.Using the qualitative method of data collection, this thesis examined the role, functions, contributions, influence and inadequacy of the United Nations in Conflict Resolution in Africa using Sierra Leone,Sudan(Darfur)and Libya as case studies with research questions bordering on the relevance of the UN in conflict resolution in Africa as well as the effectiveness of her mechanism for and approach to conflict resolution.Findings revealed that while the UN's methods and approach to conflict resolution were largely successful in Sierra Leone, they have been partially successful in the ongoing conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan and not quite successful in Libya at the moment.Although the UN has made progress in terms of Peacekeeping missions across the continent,it has done little regarding conflict Prevention. This research therefore recommends that the UN should focus more on preventing the outbreak of conflicts, act fast in resolving conflicts. It further recommends that for effective conflict resolution, the United Nations Security Council should be reformed to include an African Country with permanent-membership status,as this would better complement hybrid missions between the UN and regional organizations like the African Union.
