ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to investigate the predictors of carotid intima-media thickness thickening in Chinese obese patients, analyzed the effect of weight loss surgery on thickness changes and discussed possible predictors of postoperative changes.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed the patients undergoing bariatric surgery included LRYGB and LSG in the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University between April2017 and October 2017.Anthropometric data, lipids and C-IMT data was collected before and 3,6 and 12months after bariatric surgeryResultsThis study enrolled 327 patients(age 30.62±10.11,BMI 38.78±8.37 Kg/m2),multiple linear regression analysis showed that age, neck circumference, alcohol consumption, and systolic blood pressure, were independent risk factors for C-IMT thickening(β1=0.006,β2=0.005,β3=0.055,β4=0.001,p<0.05).It was significant improvement in C-IMT after weight loss surgery(p<0.05)in 80 follow-up cases, and there is no difference between LSG and LRYGB.Pre C-IMT,age,systolic blood pressure, smoking, and HbA1c are predictors of C-IMT changing in 80 review cases(β1=0.408,β2=-0.004,β3=-0.002,β4=-0.019,β5=-0.072,p<0.05).ConclusionsAge,neck circumference, systolic blood pressure, and alcohol consumption in Chinese obesity patients are independent risk factors for carotid intima-media thickening.Obesity surgery can effectively reduce carotid intima-media thickness in obese patients in connection with preoperative age, glycosylated hemoglobin, systolic blood pressure, and postoperative C-IMT.
