Background: Rapidly progressive dementia(RPD)is a type of rapid dementia syndrome that progresses from the onset of symptoms to affect neurological function in only weeks to months. It is generally considered that the severity from the disease onset to the decline of the patient's intelligence is less than 24 months.Based on clinical opinion, the common remote causes, such as vascular, degenerative, and autoimmune diseases, could lead to RPD.Although clinical discuss has paid more attention to RPD,the most common etiology of RPD and the proportion of various etiologies are inconclusive, and research conclusions in different regions are not the same. The research analyzes the confirmed cases of inpatients in the neurology wards of the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University, and explores the common etiology and related etiology of RPD in inpatients. Objective: To describe the etiology and prevalence of Rapid progressive dementia in the neurological wards of the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University,to identify the underlying causes that can lead to rapid progressive dementia,to assist the early diagnosing of RPD,as same as in the treatment and to delay to the generation of RPD.Methods: The medical records of all patients admitted to the Departments of Neurology of the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University from July 2017 to July 2018 were retrospectively analyzed.Patients who had symptoms of dementia during hospitalization and who met the diagnosis of dementia were included. For patients who has dementia symptoms which can be explained by mental illness were not included.Sort out the various causes that can cause rapid progressive dementia and their proportion in all included cases. Results: On the basis of the established criteria,In the 6,289 inpatients we picked during the research period,we screened 72 eligible cases(1.14%)and identified them as RPD to establish a study group. The average age of the study subjects was 63.65,and there was 3 months as the median progression time usually.According to analysis, treatable dementia is the main cause of RPD(95.83%).Among them, vascular dementia(55.56%)and nonprotoninous neurological degenerative disease(11.11%)are the most common.Untreated dementia which includes prion disease accounts for only 4.17%.Conclusion: In the limited environment of this subject group, vascular disease may be the most common cause of RPD,and other treatable causes such as neurological degenerative diseases and immune-related diseases cannot be ignored.RPD requires timely assessment, diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and so on.Research on the etiology of RPD can help us to be more alert when faced with diseases and to minimize or delay the appearance of RPD.
