In the 21 st century, with the acceleration of global integration and increasingly frequent international communication, the internationalization level of the medical and health services is also constantly improving. In order to meet the needs of the society for all levels of talents with both medical knowledge and English skills,it is urgent for medical colleges and universities at all levels to cultivate high-quality talents with both medical knowledge and foreign language proficiency.Under this background, many medical colleges and universities in China have set up the course,Medical English which is one branch of ESP(English for Special Purpose).Yong Zhou Vocational Technical College,as a national model vocational college, has also added Medical English curriculum to all majors in medical College since2010.But can the present Medical English curriculum setting meet the needs of medical students? Does it meet the needs of social and medical workers? With these problems, the author investigates the current situation of Medical English offered in this College in order to find out the target needs of the medical workers and the learning need of the students as well as the problems existing in the curriculum setting of Medical English and make it serve the real needs of medical students, society and medical workers more effectively.Based on the theory of ESP(English for Special Purpose)and needs analysis theory of Hutchinson & Waters and Dudley-Evan & ST.John, this study investigated 300 medical students,30 medical English teachers and 45 medical workers who graduated from this college through questionnaires and interviews, and analyzed and compared the data and information collected. The survey has found that both the medical students and the medical workers generally believe that Medical English is very important and have a clear motivation for learning;the most desirable Medical English skills they want to improve are the practical ability of Medical English such as listening and speaking abilities. In addition, the survey results also has showed that there are some problems existing in Medical English curriculum in this college which result in the failing to meet the learning needs of the students, such as the curriculum setting needed to be optimized, the ambiguous teaching objectives, insufficient class hours, too difficult and narrow-covered textbooks, outdated teaching modes and methods, weak ESP teachers and its structures, unreasonable curriculum evaluation, too single examination form, and limited using of network platform. Finally, according to the actual situation of Medical English curriculum setting in the college and ESP needs analysis theory, the author also has put forward some specific suggestions on the above issues, with a view to provide reference and guidance for the popularization of ESP curriculum in other department of this college.
