Objective:To evaluate the effectiveness of Chinese traditional opera intervention on elderly living with dementia. Methods:Elderly volunteers with dementia who met the inclusion criteria were divided into an intervention group(n=21)and a control group(n=22).Chinese traditional opera was administered to the intervention group for 12 weeks and routine nursing to the control group. The Minimum Mental State Examination(MMSE),the Chinese version of the neuropsychiatric inventory(CNPI),and Quality of Life in Alzheimer’s disease(QOL-AD)were used to assess effectiveness at pre-test,6 weeks, and 12 weeks.Generalized estimated equation(GEE)were used for statistical analysis. Results:There were statistically significant(P<0.05)differences between the intervention and the control groups in terms of MMSE(P=0.00),CNPI(P=0.00)and QOL-AD(P=0.01).Conclusions: Chinese traditional opera intervention could improve the cognitive function of elderly people living with dementia, reduce the behavioral and psychiatric symptoms of dementia(BPSD)and enhance quality of life. |
