Lack of knowledge about antibiotics cause people to have a misconception about the use of antibiotics and this lead to misuse and over use of antibiotics which cause antibiotics resistance.Educational intervention has proven to be a way of raising awareness towards antibiotic use and resistance. This study aimed at evaluating the knowledge, attitude and practice among both Chinese students and foreign students and at accessing the effectiveness of an educational intervention that was enrolled during the world antibiotic awareness week.1.Knowledge,attitude and practice towards antibiotics useMethods: 237 foreign students and 1619 Chinese students were randomly selected from three different southeast university campuses in Nanjing,China.A self-administered questionnaire was used which was in English and Chinese. The questionnaires were distributed online(via wechat)and physically by hand to the participants.Pearson chi-square tests,Paired samples t-test and one way ANOVA tests were used to test the statistical significance with a significant level of 0.05.Results: The foreign participants had a knowledge mean score of 4.97 over 10 and the Chinese respondents had 5.83 over 10.The foreign participants had an Attitude mean score of 3.62 over 5 and the Chinese students 3.84 over 5.The foreign respondents had a practice mean score of 9.57 over 21 and the Chinese participants had 9.94 over 21 Among the Chinese participants, major and gender were significantly associated with knowledge, major and age were significantly associated with attitude.Practice was significantly associated with age and the students in the age group 30-34 had a better practice.Among the foreign participants none of the demographic factors were significant related to knowledge, attitude and practice regarding antibiotic use. Conclusion: From our study, the result showed insufficient knowledge, attitude and practice among the southeast university participants. In order to raise awareness of antibiotic rational use and resistance interventions such as educational interventions are required.2.Raising awareness towards antibiotic resistance: Educational interventionMethods: A series of activities were conducted in the world antibiotic awareness week from 14 th to 20 th November 2016.A modified questionnaire based on previous studies was used as a tool. The Statistical Package for Social Science(SPSS)software 20 was utilized for statistical analysis and tabulation as well as some graphic presentations of the results.Descriptive statistics and independence samples t-test was applied in the analysis of the data that determined the anticipated the result of this occupational health education. Results: 57.7% of foreign respondents and 74.4% of Chinese respondents noticed the raising awareness activities enrolled in November from 14 th to 20 th 2016 among them only 36.3% of foreign participants and 62.7% of Chinese respondents got materials about antibiotic resistance. The knowledge and attitude scores among the Chinese and foreign participants who read the educational material is higher than those who did not read the educational material. The independent t test showed a statistical significant difference for the knowledge and not the comparing the baseline and the data collected after the educational intervention for those who got the educational material, among the Chinese respondents the independent t test showed a statistical significant difference(p<0.05)for the knowledge questions however for the foreign participants the difference of the knowledge questions was not statistically significant. For the attitude questions no statistical significant difference was seen. Conclusion: Educational interventions are known to be one of the ways to improve rational use of antibiotics and to raise awareness regarding antibiotic resistance,in this study the results showed a slight increase in knowledge and attitude. However more interventions should take place in order to reach more students and further research are encouraged to know if practice of antibiotics improve after educational intervention.
