Objectives By using questionnaires, we aim to find out neonatal nurses’ emphasis and mastery of pain-related knowledge, and to look for problems during clinical work when neonatal pain was taken care.To evaluate the effect of the knowledge, attitude, practice (KAP) education model on the education of neonatal pain assessment and intervention, and to analysis the advantages and disadvantages of two different education models by comparing them.To investigate the effect and value of KAP education model on the education of neonatal pain assessment and intervention, and to lay foundation for the enhancement of nursing care in neonatal pain. Methods Questionnaires were used in this study, and we separated234neonatal nurses from4hospitals in one city:experimental group and control group. Neonatal nurses in experimental goup were educated with KAP education model, and neonatal nurses in control goup were educated with common education model. Using questionnaires designed by ourselves, we took investigation in the two groups of neonatal nurses. After two independent sample t test, we compared the results of the two groups, and tried to find out the effect and value of KAP education model on the education of neonatal pain assessment and intervention. Results We successfully retrieved224effective questionnaires and the efficient was 95.7%. After statistical analysis, neonatal nurses in experimental group showed better mastery of knowledge on neonatal pain compared to those in control group (P<0.01). Their score were25and16, respectively. Score of knowledge on neonatal pain assessment in experimental group was19and was better than that in control group (P <0.01), which was11. With respect to knowledge on neonatal pain intervention, the experimental group also showed certain superiority than the control group (P<0.01), which manifested the advantage of KAP education model over common education model in education of neonatal pain assessment and intervention. Conclusion The overall situation of neonatal nurses in neonatal pain knowledge, neonatal pain assessment and intervention was not optimistic. Our investigation showed that neonatal pain was often neglected in clinical work, which might be improved by educating neonatal nurses using KAP education model. KAP education model may better neonatal pain assessment and intervention in clinical work, and may also lay foundation for the enhancement of nursing care in neonatal pain.
