Objective:To evaluate sleep quality and quality of life in patients with atrial fibrillation, and to investigate the relationship between sleep quality and quality of life. Methods:This study involved patients with a diagnosis of atrial fibrillation who were hospitalized in Department of Cardiology of the Second Hospital of Hebei Medical University between February 2018 and August 2018.Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI)and quality of life was assessed using the Atrial Fibrillation Effect on Quality-of-life questionnaire(AFEQT).Patients were classified into two groups according to global PSQI score: poor sleep quality group and good sleep quality group. Results:One hundred and three patients with atrial fibrillation were enrolled into the study.Poor sleep quality was present in 57% of the patients. In addition, patients with poor sleep quality had significantly worse subjective sleep quality and sleep efficiency, longer sleep latency, shorter sleep duration, more sleep disturbances and daytime dysfunctions in comparison with patients with good sleep quality(P<0.05).Patients with good sleep quality had significantly higher scores in 4 AFEQT scores(symptoms, daily activities, treatment concerns and AFEQT global score)than the patients with poor sleep quality(P<0.05).Symptoms(r=-0.459,P<0.05),daily activities(r=-0.366,P<0.05),treatment concerns(r=-0.462,P<0.05)and AFEQT global score(r=-0.396,P<0.05)were negatively associated with global PSQI score. Conclusion:Poor sleep quality affects approximately half of the patients with atrial fibrillation.Subjects with poor sleep quality had poorer quality of life than those with good sleep quality.Clinicians should take sleep quality into consideration when treating patients with atrial fibrillation in order to improve both sleep quality and quality of life.
