| Objective The present study aimed to determine the level of posttraumatic growth and the correlation of posttraumatic growth between resilience, coping styles and social support in the parents of children with beta-thalassemia major.Semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore the experience of posttraumatic growth among them. Methods Investigative study and qualitative study were conducted in the present study. The investigative study is a cross-sectional survey. All members of a convenience sample of 101 parents of children with beta-thalassemia major completed self-report measures of background information,Chinese Posttraumatic Growth Inventory(C-PTGI),Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale(CD-RISC),Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire(SCSQ).SPSS 20.0 was used for statistical analysis. The qualitative study was conducted using a descriptive phenomenological approach.A purposive sampling was carried out until data saturation.Semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore the posttraumatic growth experiences of 8 parents of children with beta-thalassemia major. Results In the investigative study:(1)The total average score on C-PTGI of 101 parents was(63.66±12.15).The mean score of items in each dimension from high to low were: appreciation of life(3.70±0.68),relating to others(2.66±0.85),personal strength(3.54±0.95),new possibilities(2.72±0.89)and self-transformation(3.00±0.88).(2)It was found to be difference in posttraumatic growth in terms of duration of education.(3)The total average score on CD-RISC was(60.19±15.21),three dimensions were: tenacity(31.15±8.40),optimistic(7.61±2.58),strength(21.43±5.69).(4)In the Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire, single item scores of two dimensions were positive coping style(1.7±0.51)and negative coping style(0.98±0.50).(5)The total average score on PSSS was(54.70±13.29),and total scores of two dimensions were: family support(19.46±5.02),out of family support(35.25±9.36).(6)It was found that the total score of CD-RISC and “optimistic” subdomain of CD-RISC had a positive correlation with total PTGI scores and all subdomain of PTGI.There was a positive significant correlation between “tenacity” and “strength” subdomains of CD-RISC and total scores and all subdomains of PTGI.There was a significant positive correlation between positive coping and total PTGI scores and all subdomains of PTGI.No correlation was found between negative coping to total PTGI scores and all subdomains.A significant positive correlation was found between the total score and all subdomains of PSSS and all subdomains of PTGI except “spiritual change.” In the qualitative study, five themes were extracted:(1)Posttraumatic growth is periodic.(2)Changes of cognitions.(3)Personal good qualities appeared and were reinforced.(4)Adopted positive coping styles(5)The supportive systems of posttraumatic. Conclusion A relatively middle level of posttraumatic growth exists among the parents of children with beta-thalassemia major.Parents’ duration of education, resilience, coping style, social support, are main influencing factors of their posttraumatic growth.Responsibility is a prerequisite to the posttraumatic growth.Posttraumatic growth is periodic. The changes of cognitions, the appearance and reinforce of personal good qualities, sense of purpose can help promote the posttraumatic growth. |
