Objective:Previous studies proved that patients with epilepsy(PWEs)are at high risk of suffering from anxiety and depression comorbidities, which significantly impact PWEs quality of life(QOL)and quality of sleep.Medications intervention can improve PWEs quality of life and seizure. Some studies indicated that parent of children with epilepsy also experience severe anxiety and depression, which affect parental quality of life. However, nowadays study focus on relationship between caregiver' anxiety and depression with adult PWEs anxiety and depression comorbidities and QOL is rare.In our study,we assessed adult PWEs and their caregiver' anxiety and depression,as well as adult PWEs' quality of life.We examined the correlations between adult PWEs QOL,anxiety, and depression with their caregivers anxiety and depression. Methods:The participants of this study were 131 pairs of adult PWEs and their caregivers, who regularly attended the Epilepsy Center in Henan Provincial People's Hospital between March 1,2017 and March 31,2018.These patients were divided into experiment group(58 patients)and control group(73 patients)according to caregivers whether or not have anxiety or(and)depression.QOL in adult PWEs was evaluatedwith the Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory-31 scale(QOLIE-31).Symptoms of anxiety and depression in adult PWEs and their caregivers were assessed with the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale(HAM-A)and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale(HAM-D)respectively.Independent samples t test was used to identify whether there are significant difference on QOL,anxiety and depression between experiment group and control group. The correlation analyses were used to analyze the relation between adult PWEs' QOL,anxiety and depression with their caregivers' anxiety and depression. Results:There are significant statistical difference between experiment group' depression and QOLIE-31 domains: seizure worry, overall quality of life, emotional wellbeing, and cognitive with control group(p<0.05).There are no statistical difference between experiment group' anxiety and QOLIE-31 domains: energy/fatigue,medication effect, social function and the QOLIE-31 total score with control group(p>0.05).Caregivers' anxiety was significantly associated with higher adult PWEs HAM-A and HAM-D scores, and poorer QOL cognitive subscale score(p<0.05).Caregivers' depression was significantly associated with higher adult PWEs HAM-A and HAM-D scores, and poorer adult PWEs QOL in five subscales: seizure worry, emotional well-being,energy/fatigue,cognitive,social function,as well as the QOLIE-31 total score(p<0.05).Adult PWEs' age was significantly associated with higher adult PWEs QOL in two subscales: medication effects, social function, and the QOLIE-31 total score(p<0.05).Seizure duration was significantly associated with higher adult PWEs QOL medication effects subscale score(p<0.05).Conclusions:There are significant statistical difference between experiment group' depression and QOLIE-31 domains: seizure worry, overall quality of life, emotional wellbeing, and cognitive with control group.Caregivers' psychological status, especially depression, has widely association between poorer QOL,anxiety and depression for adult PWEs.
